Barcoded cards and products are the most inexpensive way of collecting, verifying and tracking information. They are also an unobtrusive way of communicating with the customer at a personal level. Barcode symbologies are defined by numbers, punctuation and letters from the alphabet. The information is then encrypted and converted into dark bars and white spaces of varying widths.

Barcodes allow data information to be recorded 5 to 7 times faster than a skilled typist, and have just over 10,000 times better accuracy in data entry, barcodes are read with a scanner which translates the encrypted code back into the data via a computer or some other electronic hardware device. In most cases software and hardware systems are readily available to customers and allow easy linking of card numbers, and databases.
